June 2025

It is a very busy term with lots of exciting things happening across school.

In reception, the children have been learning about poetry and listening to poems by Michael Rosen as well as how he began to write poetry at a young age. They have been discussing what it is to be a poet and how when you write a poem you have to imagine the reader using their imagination or feelings when reading it. They would do this by thinking about what the words mean and how they sound. They have also been learning that poems sometimes have rhyming words and that poetry is meant to be read aloud.

The children, together with support, were then encouraged to write together about their school, this is the poem they created:

We go to West Rise Primary School,

We think it's really cool

We learn, we play, we have lots of fun

At lunch we have yummy food in our tums,

We are happy

We feel safe

We get to play with all our mates,

So let's all cheer and clap our hands

We are all West Rise number one fans.

Year one have been learning about wedding ceremonies from different faiths focusing more closely on comparing a Christian and Hindu wedding. The children were fascinated by the similarities and differences in their traditions. To complete their learning, they had a wonderful time reenacting our own West Rise wedding, where our local Vicar, Reverend Alan Weaver came in to help bring the ceremony to life.

Year 2 recently went on a fantastic trip to Friston Forest. They took part in lots of activities such as den building, printing with leaves, making clay and much more! The children were incredible and we were so proud of the way they represented West Rise!

The year two children will also be learning about Space this month, they always enjoy this topic and love getting involved in all the activities such as:

· Learning about the first person to land on the moon (History)

· Exploring space shuttles and equipment needed for life in space(Science and PHSE)

· Designing their own rockets (DT)

· Recreating Van Gogh’s Starry Night picture. (Art)

As a fabulous finish to their Space topic they will have a fantastic experience visiting the Planetarium on Thursday 27th June, where they will see actual photos of the stars and planets right at the moment in time! They will also see the International Space Station, and find out many amazing facts about the planets and stars!
