Year One Newsletter - Autumn Term 1 2026
A very warm welcome to all you Year One families! We are so pleased with how beautifully the children have settled into Year 1. They have come intoschool independently with smiles and anticipation for their new day. With wellbeing at the forefront of our school, we have taken the first few weeks to get to know each child, making sure all the children feel safe and ready for learning. We have enjoyed meeting our class ‘Wise Old Owls’ and ‘Hideaway Hedgehogs’, who have taught us that we are all great learners and can achieve anything if we don’t give up. We have also been focusing on what makes a kind friend and building our class charters together to keep us all safe in a happy learning environment.
We start our Year 1 English learning with some traditional tales, such as ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’, where we build upon reading and writing simple sentences with cvc (consonant-vowel-consonant) and tricky words. We will then move onto ‘The Naughty Bus’, bringing us towards our ‘Fire, Fire’ theme. This exciting work will carry on into the afternoons where we will be introducing the foundation subjects: Geography, History, R.E, Art and Science.
In Geography we will be learning about our local area and the beautiful nature around us. This exciting learning takes place both inside and out, with our beautifully set up outdoor classrooms and the Nature Garden.
In Maths, the children will be learning to read and write numbers with growing confidence. We will be counting, ordering and looking closely at place value, building a strong concept of number for calculation and problem solving. We will be focusing on numbers to 10, looking at clear formation, patterns, number bonds and calculation.
In Information Technology, we are learning to use the laptops to log on and navigate the keypad. We will be introducing ‘Purple Mash’ which can also be accessed at home.
We are currently in the process of assessing each child’s phonics and reading to make sure that they receive the correct books. Thank you for your patience as we know you are keen to get reading with your child. We have purchased lots of new reading books this year so please ensure they are looked after and returned to be changed each week.
We have begun our P.E lessons, which are on a Thursday each week. Remember that children come inwearing their P.E kits. We hope that you and the children will really enjoy Year 1.
Thank you for your continued support, Year One Team
