Year 5 Newsletter - Autumn Term 1 2026

We hope you have all had a lovely summer and that the children are excited to begin Year 5! We are looking forward to the exciting year ahead. Here are our email addresses if you need to contact us:

This term some children in Year 5 have Swimming! Please check with your child and their teacher if you are not sure. The dates for each class are below. Please send your child to school with their swimming kit.

- Elm Class: 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 29th & 30th of September and the 1st of October.

- Birch Class: 6th, 7th, 8th, 13th, 14th & 15th of October.

- Maple Class: 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th & 12th of November

English: This term, Year 5 will be diving into some exciting and imaginative worlds through our English lessons! We’ll begin with 'The Tin Forest' by Helen Ward, exploring the powerful themes of hopes, dreams and the difference that one person can make. We will then journey into the wonderfully imaginative world of' The Lost Thing' by Shaun Tan, using it as inspiration for our own fantasy writing while exploring the important message that everyone and everything has a place where they belong Finally, we’ll head off on a thrilling Viking adventure with 'How to Train Your Drago'n by Cressida Cowell, where the children will develop their descriptive and story telling skills by writing their own exciting extract. It’s going to be a fantastic term full of creativity, imagination and adventure!

Maths: This term, our mathematics work will have a strong focus on building a strong understanding of place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. To best support your child’s learning, please continue to encourage your child to log on regularly on times tables rockstars!

Topic: We are looking forward to starting our new Geography topic all about Brazil. Together, we’ will discover where Brazil sits in the world, what its incredible landscapes are like, and why the Amazon rainforest is so important. Later in the unit, we’ll turn our attention to Brazil’s bustling cities, finding out how urban life is changing and what makes Rio de Janeiro such a vibrant and popular place to visit. It promises to be a colourful and exciting topic, and we can’t wait to see the children build their understanding of this fascinating country.
