Year 5 Summer Term 2 Newsletter 2026

Dear Parents and Carers,

 

Welcome to Term 6! The final stretch before the summer holidays and we have lots planned to look forward to.

Forest school:

This term Year 5 have forest school! This will be for one whole afternoon each. The dates are below:

·        Tuesday the 7th July – Birch Class

·        Wednesday the 8th July– Elm Class

·        Thursday the 9th July – Maple Class

Please ensure children come to school in their forest school clothing, appropriate for the weather on the day. Sun cream and sun hats if it’s sunny.

Events:

There are lots of events happening this term, please keep an eye out for more information via school ping.   On Friday the 26th of June we are having our second Spark Species Science Festival where year 5 are focusing on life underwater. In the afternoon of Friday the 3rd of July, we have our sports day event. To end the year, on Tuesday the 21st of July we will have our family picnic where school closes to all pupils at 1:30pm, ready for an amazing summer!

Curriculum Highlights

English: This term, Year 5 will be embarking on an exciting journey through a variety of engaging English topics. Inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the children will be writing their own captivating narratives, exploring character, atmosphere and dramatic storytelling. They will also learn about the life and works of Shakespeare, discovering why his plays continue to be celebrated around the world. In poetry, pupils will explore animal-inspired poems and develop their performance skills, using expression and voice to bring their work to life. Alongside this, they will strengthen their non-fiction writing by researching the Amazon rainforest and investigating the effects of climate change, producing informative and thought-provoking pieces of writing.

Maths: We are focusing on lots of different topics this term including decimals, negative numbers, converting units and volume. To best support your child’s learning, please continue to encourage your child to log on regularly on timestables rockstars! We will also be focusing on word problems and how to practice them. You can support your child with this by doing some word problems with them if you would like too.

Reading – This term we will finishing our class reader Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll.
