Reception - Spring Term 2 - Newsletter 2026

Welcome back to the wonderful world of ‘Spring and Growth’ our topic for this term. The children have started with learning all about ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ including finding a giant beanstalk growing in their classrooms! They were so surprised to see this along with a letter explaining that it was the Giant who had broken into the school to find his golden egg! The children have been watching the golden egg to see if it will crack and making comments about what it might be. A very exciting start to this term indeed!

In Maths, we will be exploring the text – ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ by Nick Butterworth and this will lead into lots of practical activities involving length, height and weight. We will also continue to explore larger numbers, recapping addition and practising our doubling. Hopefully, some signs of Spring will soon appear and this will give us the opportunity to plant lots of flowers and vegetables within our outdoor area! The children have been busy this week helping us to create our new garden centre role play areas filling it with lots of lovely flower crafts. Our artist study this term is ‘Mark Herald,’ who creates beautiful bird paintings and this will inspire our own painting of birds.

Our key texts have been carefully selected to underpin our Wellbeing First curriculum, ‘The Colour Monster’ has really helped the children explore different emotions and how to cope with them. We also plan special ‘circle time’ activities to help us with friendship and kindness. Through these mindful activities and being together, children will learn how to be a good friend. In Physical Education (PE) this term, we will be continuing to develop our ball skills, focussing on control, coordination and teamwork. We will then begin to move towards basketball, building on the skills and techniques we learned previously.

We look forward to seeing you all at our next Parents Evening and continuing to work in close partnership with you to support your child’s progress. Your ongoing involvement makes a real difference, and we are grateful for the support you have already shown. Thank you for being such an important part of our school community.

If you have any excess flower pots, seeds, trowels, or other garden bits and bobs they would begratefully received if you wouldn’t mind passing to your child’s class teacher. The Reception Team
