Year One Autumn Term 1

A very warm welcome to all you Year One families!

We are so pleased with how beautifully the children have settled into year 1. They have come into school independently with smiles and anticipation for their new day. With wellbeing at the forefront of our school, we have taken the first few weeks to get to know each child, making sure all the children feel safe and ready for learning.

The children have spent time learning about the different parts of the brain and how they can use their brain to help them focus, think, remember information and to keep themselves calm. We have enjoyed meeting our class wise old owls and hideaway hedgehogs who have taught us that we are all great learners and can achieve anything if we don’t give up.

These essential skills have already come in useful as we enter into our West Rise Learning Tree curriculum. Our overarching theme this term is ‘Into the Woods’ where we are learning many traditional tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, The magic Porridge Pot and The Three Little Pigs.

This exciting work will carry on into the afternoons when we will be learning about our local area and the beautiful nature around us.

In Science this term the children will be looking into materials and deciding which might be useful for building a strong house for the three little pigs.

In Math the children will be learning to read and write numbers with growing confidence to 20. We will be counting, ordering and looking closely at their place value building a strong concept of number for calculation and problem solving.

In Computers we are learning to use the laptops to log on, navigate the key pad and use the Paint program to create their own woodland pictures.

We are currently in the process of assessing each child’s phonic and reading to make sure that they receive the correct books. Thank you for your patience as we engage each child with our new phonic and reading scheme – it is time well spent we assure you!

We have begun our P.E lessons, which are on a Thursday each week. Most children now have P.E kits in school. Can you please check that you have now bought your child’s P.E kit into school. We hope that you and the children will really enjoy year 1.
